June 30th, 2009 Posted 2:11 pm
Second In A SeriesChuck Carruthers tries to run his finger between the top of the tire and the underside of the right front fender of the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Then he slides beneath the car and measures the gap between the spring’s coils, using a feeler gauge.
“Down a bit more,” he calls out from beneath the car. From the far side of the lift, an electric motor begins spinning a hydraulic pump and almost magically the chassis drops down another (more…)

Racing Fuel Safety – Fuel Transportation
June 30th, 2009 Posted 5:09 am
Transporting racing fuel, pump gas, and alcohol is an activity that gets little respect. Gasoline and, to a lesser extent, alcohol do not receive the respect that the amount of energy they are storing should get. From a safety perspective, we need to exercise great care when transporting and storing any fuel. And as fuel costs continue to rise we need to make sure we are getting all the value from the fuel we are using. This means that any activity (more…)

Race Team Sponsorships – The Money Game
June 30th, 2009 Posted 2:05 am
What is the link between racers, fans, and businesses potentially involved with sponsorship in racing? That is the link that racers need to determine when looking to secure funds from any business. It may be an obvious user-defined link such as a racing vendor supporting a car or a home improvement center sponsoring a NASCAR team. The sponsor is looking to get its name in front of a specific set of customers and associate the company name with racing. (more…)

Doing It On Dirt: Dirt Stock Car Racing Across America and Where To Find It
June 30th, 2009 Posted 1:59 am

You name any particular series–Nextel Cup, Craftsman Trucks, ARCA, Hooters Pro Cup, and Trans Am–and most times the action is on asphalt. If you check your television listings, you might be able to find a taped Dirt Late Model race, but that’s about it.
Many television viewers probably think that it’s always been a pavement surface (more…)

Electrical System Maintenance – The Power To Perform
June 28th, 2009 Posted 11:38 pm
The electrical system on a car can present a confusing dynamic to many racers. With that in mind, we’ve asked the writer to address some common missteps found in motorsports.
You should have a 1/4-inch ground stud welded to the chassis in an easily accessible location near the starter solenoid. This is a common ground junction point for the engine, cylinder heads, ignition, tach, driver coolers, and all blowers. It may be prettier to hide junction (more…)

Help for Legendary Racer Chick Stockwell
June 28th, 2009 Posted 11:23 pm
Charles “Chick” Stockwell was the man at the now-defunct Danbury Fair Race Arena in Connecticut. Chick raced there from 1952 through the final year of the track’s operation in 1981, with the exception of the ‘56 and ‘57 seasons when the track was closed.
Chick won 208 races at Danbury, tops among all drivers there, and his 52 feature wins rank second only to Don Lajoie, father of two-time Busch Series champion Randy Lajoie, who claimed 58 features.
